Meet Gary

Joined Alex FM: 2021

A lifelong soul music devotee, Gary Donnelly brings decades of passion and deep musical knowledge to Soul Galore, his weekly celebration of all things soul, Motown, and Northern Soul. Inspired at the age of 11 by the rebellious energy of UK pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline and Radio London, Gary’s love for radio and soul music has only grown stronger with time.

Before joining Alex FM, Gary made regular guest appearances on Melbourne’s PBS FM 106.7 on the acclaimed show Soul Time. Now retired from a 32-year corporate career in sales and marketing, Gary uses his time and talent to give back to the community he loves — both on air and off. His radio work is matched by his community leadership as a coordinator of local social walking and cycling groups, and as a DJ alongside his wife Judy, performing as Soul Galore at lifestyle villages and venues.

Gary is also a devoted fan of David Bowie, appreciating his innovation, artistry, and lasting influence across genres. His all-time favourite track, however, is the rare and emotive “What Can I Do” by Billy Prophet (Sue Records) — a powerful soul ballad that perfectly encapsulates the depth and authenticity Gary seeks in music.

For Gary, community radio is all about connection and uplift — “enlightening minds and brightening days” with music that moves the soul.
