Nestled in the heart of Goolwa, inside the heritage-listed Railway Superintendents’ Cottage on BF Laurie Lane, Radio Goolwa, Alex FM 91.5 is more than just a community radio station – it’s a voice for the Fleurieu Peninsula. Broadcasting 24/7, Alex FM is run entirely by passionate volunteers who are dedicated to delivering diverse, innovative, and community-driven programming.

Broadcasting from Goolwa to surrounding towns—and streaming worldwide—we deliver a rich blend of music for all ages, local news, sport, weather updates, and in-depth coverage of community groups, events, and stories that celebrate the unique culture of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Our mission is to provide the very best ‘on and off air’ services, ensuring that every song, every voice, and every moment on Alex FM is a true reflection of the community we proudly serve.

Our History

Alex FM began as a dream shared by eight Goolwa locals in November 2001. With passion and persistence, the group incorporated in early 2002 and applied for a temporary radio broadcasting licence. Just a year later, the station began recording and playing programs on a narrowcast channel.

In 2004, Alex FM was granted a temporary community licence on 96.3 FM, initially sharing airwaves with Christian Broadcasters. By May 2012, we proudly secured a long-term licence, establishing Alex FM as a permanent part of the regional media landscape. In 2020, we updated our broadcast frequency to 91.5 FM to better serve our growing audience.

Today, Alex FM has grown into a vibrant hub of activity. Our talented team of on-air presenters, production staff, office volunteers, and a dynamic fundraising group bring passion, personality, and professionalism to everything we do. With regular live broadcasts, community events, and a broad music library that reflects our listeners’ tastes, we continue to evolve while staying true to our roots.

Milestones

  • 12th of November 2001 a Chairman and Vice Chair was elected and each member put in $50 as a registration fee
  • 4th of January 2002, Alex-FM became incorporated
  • 18th of January 2022, submitted an application to ACMA for a temporary license
  • December 2003, Alex-FM had equipment to record programs and play them on a narrow cast channel
  • 2004 a temporary shared community license was granted to broadcast on 96.5 FM. The station obtained new equipment to link to the tower on Kirby Hill. By this time Alex-FM had 50 members with 16 volunteering as ON-Air Presenters broadcasting live programs from 6am to 9pm and a music mix through the night. Other volunteers assisted in Production, Fund raising, Sales, and Admin
  • 2012, Alex-FM was granted a permanent license to broadcast on 96.3 FM
  • We now broadcast on 91.5 with over 80 members with 41 volunteering as Presenters.

Our Mission

The Radio Alexandrina (Alex FM) Broadcasters Association Incorporated exists to serve the Lake Alexandrina and Fleurieu Peninsula region through a democratically operated, community-focused radio station.

Our mission is to:

  • to offer ‘on and off air’ services to the largest possible number of cultural, racial and interest groups and individuals 
  • to provide them with the mechanisms to take an active part in the organisation’s management and operation so that radio programs and other activities fulfill the community’s expectations  
  • to remember at all times that the radio station exists for the general community and not for individual managers, presenters or other volunteers. 

At Alex FM, community comes first. We’re not driven by ratings or revenue — we’re driven by connection, creativity, and the desire to be a positive force in the lives of our listeners.
